About This Site:

Dan Harper should not lose his teaching certificate. We do not claim that Mr Harper did everything right, and we are also not impugning the motives of the Eanes school board or superintendent. However, we stand strongly against any action that could lead to the revocation of Mr Harper’s teaching certificate.

Board Meeting Audio:

2007-11-28: Open Forum session in which numerous speeches are made by the public in support of Mr Harper.

Mrs Balthazar and Mr Sayers generally stick up for Mr Harper. The others do not.

2007-09-26: MP3: The Board debates the superintendent’s “Personnel Recommendations”. Mr Harper is not mentioned by name here, nor in the minutes (PDF), nor in the agenda (PDF). It’s not even clear what they’re talking about, but this seems to be where they file the ethics complaint. They seem to want to sweep it under the rug.

2007-10-24: MP3: Mr Harper, given all of three minutes to explain the situation, attempts to do so. PDF transcript by a contributor. Sounds like there were some shenanigans going on…

2007-10-24: MP3: Mr Scott Pass, former calculus teacher at Westlake, speaks on behalf of Mr Harper. PDF transcript by a contributor.

2007-10-24: MP3: Superintendent Dr Nola Wellman recommends that the Board fire Mr Harper. Summary: “You can’t quit, you’re fired.”

2007-10-24: MP3: The Board accepts the recommendation, officially firing Mr Harper “for good cause”. “It takes two parties to cancel a contract” — true, but why don’t they go ahead and be the second party?

2007-11-05: KeepEanesInformed has posted its recording of the post-closed-session deliberations of the Board. PDF transcript by a contributor.

Background:

The Eanes school board has filed an ethical complaint against Mr Dan Harper, which could lead to the revocation of his teaching certificate for up to two years. See the front-page Austin American-Statesman article.

Mr Harper taught at Westlake High School for 22 years. He built the physics program into a worldbeater, helping a generation of Eanes kids to learn not just about how the universe works, but also about how to learn, and how to teach.

On August 3, Mr Harper accepted an opportunity to recreate his success at another school, the relatively new Akins High School in AISD.

Teaching contracts in Texas specify 45 days’ notice for resignations, in order to give schools time to find replacements. Mr Harper missed that deadline, resigning just over three weeks before school began. Apparently this contract term is rarely enforced, especially when there are top-notch teachers ready and waiting to step up, as in this case.

Pursuing action against Mr Harper has the following effects, all of them negative:

The district may technically be right here, and they may indeed have the right to go after Mr Harper. But that doesn’t make it the right thing to do. Why do they want to? After 22 outstanding years, we should be glad that we had him, not angry to be losing him.

What Can We Do?

Nothing, really, since everything is resolved. You could thank the board and/or superintendent for making the right decision in the end.

Kirk, Chris Student — 1992
Frey, M. Ashley Bell Student — 1993
Fu, Daniel Student — 1993 I strongly believe that Dan Harper had no ill intent in his move to leave Eanes. It would certainly be a shame if his incredible teaching methods were torn from students because he made a noble mistake.
Heiman, Max Student — 1993 Dan Harper has been an outstanding, dedicated teacher in EISD for years and has earned better treatment than this.
Hudson, Matt Student — 1993 Star educators like Dan Harper will not consider Eanes if this is how the superintendent treats him after such a long and reputable career with Eanes.

Raizen-Colman, Michal Student — 1996 Revoking Dan Harper's teaching certificate amounts to unjustly depriving students of a formative learning experience. My own high school experience would not have been complete without Mr. Harper's contagious enthusiasm.
Street, David Student — 1996 Dan Harper was likely the best teacher I've had at any level. His remarkable gift for teaching likely belongs as a high-paid university professor and we were fortunate to have him as long as we did. Our community owes him better than this embarrassingly retributive response.
Elton, Johnathan Student — 1997 Mr. Harper is one of the best teachers I have ever had the fortune to study under. To the extent that President Strickland and the members of the Eanes School Board, as well as Superintendent Nola Wellman, have any discretion in this situation, their only honorable action is to thank Mr. Harper for

Rankin, Greg Student — 1997
Scarborough, Leigh Anne Student — 1997 Eanes was extremely lucky to have Mr. Harper as a teacher. As the article notes, his job was covered at the time he resigned. There's no need for the school board to throw their weight around just because they can.
Thompson, David Student — 1997 He was a wonderful teacher and does not deserve this.
Wilson, Andrew Student — 1997
Woerner, Leslie Student — 1997 Mr. Harper to this day stands as one of the best teachers I've ever had. Educators in Texas are paid too little and have to put up with too much on a day-to-day basis to have something like this thrown at them, too. If he found a better opportunity, then good for him!
Zingaro, Kristen Student — 1997 Mr. Harper was one of the most inspired and inspiring teachers I've ever had. This country is in desperate need of teachers like Mr. Harper and any attempt to blemish his record is insupportable. The District needs to take the high road and thank him for his service!

Chudleigh, Stephen Student — 1998 Dan Harper stands out as the best teacher I ever had. I actually took an extra year of physics just to be in his class again. Malik, Semra Student — 2001
Mullenix, Robert Student — 2001 Mr. Harper inspired me to go into college and beyond as an engineer. His qualifications as a teacher are second to none. It is misplaced spite for Westlake to punish Harper for leaving. If Westlake can't have Harper, than nobody can? What kind of attitude is that? I am ashamed of my old school.
Nelson Joiner, Amanda Student — 2001
Nelson Oliver, Allison Student — 2001
Pearce, Jonathan Student — 2001 Dan and Scott Pass were the two best teachers I had at Westlake. Dan does not deserve to be treated this way.
Rusinkiewicz, Marcin Student — 2001
Sanders, Hayley Student — 2001 WHS should be grateful for having such a fantastic teacher as Dan Harper. Instead of taking legal action against him, Eanes should be asking themselves why they didn't do enough to keep this incredible teacher at the school and how to prevent this scenario from happening in the future.
Schiffel, Kimberly Student — 2001

Michalsky, Douglas J. Student — 2002 Harper's class was a top tier college course. #1 high school course at Westlake by far. If you can keep him working for high school teacher salary and you take away his license, that's just bad business and depriving future minds.
Paschall, Margaux Student — 2002 Dan Harper is one of the finest teachers Westlake had especially in their science department. His devotion to education and students has always been apparent.

Strand, Karl Student — 2002 I never had Mr. Harper but the majority of my friends did and my impression always was that he was a superb teacher, one who should be allowed to teach where ever he chooses, if only to prevent kids from missing out on the opportunity to have him.
Wilson, Kate Student — 2002
barr, sara Student — 2003 harper is a great teacher, just because dear westlake has its pride hurt is no reason to rid another school who might need him more of that talent and charisma.
Beckett, Andrew Student — 2003 Texas is an employ-at-will state. All the employment contracts I've ever signed can be terminated anytime for any reason by the employer. Why shouldn't the employee be able to quit? The Eanes administration bullies everyone and I doubt there is any act they consider too despicable to implement.

Horton, Andrew Student — 2004
Jordan, Mason Student — 2004 The excuses being made by the district are without merit. Their physics department is NOT short handed. There is no reason to hand this issue to the TEA. You are attacking a man's career with the letter of the law instead of supporting the spirit of the law.

Horwitz, Jeremy Student — 2007 It doesn't surprise me that eanes took this course of action. I do not intend to post profane language describing the board, but let it be known, I have always thought and am reconfirmed in thinking that the members of the board are dumb (to put it nicely).

I understand his actions were innappropriate but that does not change the fact that removing this mans teaching certificate would be a crime.
Pharr, Paige Student — 2007 During my time at Westlake, many of my friends and I grew to love physics under Dan Harper's instruction. Eanes should absolutely not be allowed to harm the teaching career of a man who is so apt and willing to inspire other students with a passion for learning and a knowledge of physics.

Kener, Cheryl EISD Parent Please dont give Westlake such a bad name by doing this to a fabulous teacher.
Kenyon, Kitty EISD Parent Mr. Harper is an excellent teacher. Both of my children were lucky enough to have him as a Physics teacher at Westlake High School. The district should celebrate the 22 years that he tirelessly gave
